The Purpose of Travel: Why Experiences Matter More Than Souvenirs

New travel research suggests the most valuable things we bring home aren’t always things. They’re the experiences that change how we see the world and ourselves.
What do you bring home from a vacation?
Maybe it’s a magnet for the refrigerator, a piece of local art or a suitcase full of things you probably didn’t need.
But think about the trips that have stayed with you the longest.
Chances are, what you remember most isn’t something you bought.
It’s someone you met. Something you learned. A place that challenged your assumptions or an experience that helped you see life a little differently.
And according to new travel research, more people are recognizing the value of those experiences.
The Experiences That Stay With Us
The American Express 2026 Global Travel Trends Report found that 76% of surveyed travelers believe skills learned during a trip stay with them longer than material souvenirs.
The report also found that 82% of surveyed Millennials and Gen Z say learning a new skill makes travel more memorable.
Those findings raise an interesting question: What if the greatest value of travel isn’t simply where we go, but what we gain from the experience?
Maybe it’s learning to prepare a traditional dish from a local chef. Taking a pottery class with an artisan. Exploring a destination through the stories of the people who call it home. Or discovering a different way of life.
These experiences offer something a souvenir can’t.
They give us something we can carry forward.
Finding Purpose Beyond the Destination
At Purposeful Trips, we believe travel can be about more than checking destinations off a list.
It can be an opportunity to connect, learn, grow and discover what matters most to us.
That doesn’t mean every vacation needs to become a volunteer mission or a personal transformation retreat.
Sometimes purpose is as simple as being intentional about how we spend our time.
It might mean choosing a locally owned restaurant, learning about a community’s history or having a meaningful conversation with someone whose life looks different from our own.
Sometimes it’s about reconnecting with family, celebrating a milestone or giving ourselves space to reflect.
And sometimes it’s simply about slowing down enough to appreciate the world around us.
Purposeful travel doesn’t have to be complicated. It just has to mean something to you.
The Difference Between Seeing and Experiencing
There’s a difference between visiting a place and allowing that place to become part of your story.
You can stand in front of a famous monument, take a picture and move on.
Or you can spend time learning why it matters, understanding the people and events connected to it, and discovering something you didn’t know before.
Neither experience requires a luxury budget or an exotic destination.
The difference is often our willingness to engage.
The most meaningful travel experiences invite us to step outside what’s familiar. They introduce us to different perspectives, challenge our assumptions and remind us how much there is to discover.
And sometimes, they help us discover something about ourselves.
Bringing Purpose Home
Perhaps the most important question to ask when planning a vacation isn’t just, “Where should we go?”
It’s also, “What do we hope to take away from the experience?”
Not necessarily in our luggage.
In our understanding of the world. In our relationships. In the ways we think, live and interact with others.
A great trip might leave us rested, entertained or inspired.
A purposeful trip can do all those things while giving us something that lasts.
Because the most valuable souvenir might just be a new perspective.
And unlike the things we pack in our suitcases, that’s something we can keep sharing long after we get home.
🧭 Compass Check
Before booking your next trip, ask yourself:
What do I want to bring home that won’t fit in my suitcase?
Maybe it’s a new skill, a deeper connection, a fresh perspective or simply a renewed sense of what matters most.
Think about one experience you could intentionally include in your next trip that would help you accomplish that goal.
Because purposeful travel isn’t just about choosing a destination. It’s about choosing what you want the journey to mean.
